The 6 Human Needs: 6 Reasons Why You Do What You Do

We all have a need for certainty, comfort, stability and security. We all have a need for uncertainty, variety, excitement, and surprise. We all have a need to feel significant, special, unique, or important in some way. We all have a need for connection and love. We all need to grow and evolve in some way. We all need to contribute in some way so our lives have meaning.

Stephan James has succinctly summarised Tony Robbins’ 6 reasons why we do what we do; our search for meaning based on 6 fundamental needs. The interesting thing is that we tend to prioritize certainty, connection, contribution, growth, significance in a different order based on what we want most. Whatever needs we value as our top 2 control our lives more than anything and manifest in our behavior and in our lives.

Being aware of our behavior is the first step in conceptualizing new possibilities – a new top two, in order to transform our needs with behavior that services us more.

What are your top 2 and how are they a reflection on what’s going on in your life right now?
